Endometrial Ablation

Explore an Option for Lighter Periods

If heavy periods keep interrupting your plans, you may be ready to explore a different approach.

At our practice, Dr. Yakov Levy performs endometrial ablation using NovaSure® by Hologic. This five-minute procedure uses radiofrequency energy to create targeted heat that treats the lining inside the uterus to reduce or stop heavy menstrual bleeding.

More than 4 million women have chosen NovaSure endometrial ablation. It is a quick, minimally invasive treatment that can be performed in the doctor’s office. Many women return to normal activities the next day.

A consultation is the first step toward understanding whether it fits your needs. You do not need to make a treatment decision before your visit.

What Is Endometrial Ablation

Your uterus, also called the womb, has an inner lining that builds during your menstrual cycle. When pregnancy does not happen, this lining sheds as your period.

Endometrial ablation treats that lining to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. The uterus and ovaries remain in place.

The procedure is intended for women who have not reached menopause and are certain they do not want future pregnancies.

What Are the Potential Benefits

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB), and menorrhagia can dramatically affect a woman’s comfort, confidence, and quality of life. The NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure is a simple way to reduce or stop heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding.

For suitable patients, treatment may offer:

  • Lighter periods. Some women stop having periods altogether.
  • Less disruption to daily life. Reduced bleeding may mean less planning around your period.
  • Treatment without added hormones. NovaSure uses controlled energy rather than hormone medication.
  • No skin incisions. The device reaches the uterus through its natural opening.
  • A brief procedure that usually takes about five minutes and can be performed in the doctor’s office.
  • A short recovery: many women return to regular activities the next day.

The goal is to reduce bleeding. Completely stopping periods is not guaranteed.

How Does NovaSure Work

NovaSure uses radiofrequency energy to create controlled heat that treats the uterine lining.

  1. Place the device

The doctor passes a slender device through the cervix—the opening to the uterus.

  2. Fit the mesh

A flexible mesh opens to fit the space inside the uterus.

  3. Treat the lining

The device delivers controlled energy to heat and treat the endometrial lining—the lining inside the uterus.

  4. Remove the device

The mesh folds back into the device. The device is then removed and discarded. No part of the device remains inside your body.

The energy treatment takes about 90 seconds on average. Your full visit also includes preparation and care afterward.

Is This an Option for You

Endometrial ablation may be worth discussing if:

  • Heavy bleeding affects your daily activities.
  • You have not reached menopause.
  • You do not want a future pregnancy.
  • Medicines or other treatments have not helped enough or are not suitable.
  • You want relief from heavy periods and understand that treatment may reduce or stop menstrual bleeding.

The doctor will review your symptoms, health history, previous treatments, and goals. Evaluation may include an ultrasound and a small sample of the uterine lining to check whether ablation is appropriate.

If another treatment would better address the cause of your bleeding, the doctor will explain your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my periods stop completely

They may, but many women continue to have lighter periods. It can take a few months to see the full result.

Does ablation remove my uterus

No. It treats the inner lining. A hysterectomy is a different operation that removes the uterus.

Will it cause menopause

Ablation does not remove your ovaries or change your hormone levels. Having no periods afterward does not necessarily mean you have reached menopause.

Can I become pregnant afterward

Pregnancy is still possible, but it can be dangerous after ablation. The procedure is not suitable if you want a future pregnancy. Effective birth control is still needed until menopause unless you already have permanent contraception.

How long can the benefits last

Benefits may last for years. Heavy bleeding can return, and some women need further treatment.

What if I have fibroids

The size and location of fibroids can affect which treatment is suitable. Ablation treats the uterine lining; it does not remove fibroids.

Are there other treatment options

Yes. Medicines, a hormonal IUD, or surgery to remove polyps or fibroids may help. The doctor will recommend options based on the cause of your bleeding and your goals.

What will we discuss before treatment

You can ask about expected results, comfort options, preparation, and returning to your usual activities. The doctor will also explain possible side effects and risks so you can make an informed decision.
